My favorite posts of 2011

Wrapping up the celebration of my 1000th post a few months back, I bring you some of my favorite posts of 2011. Here are my favorite posts from 2009 and 2010 in case you missed them. I don’t think its bragging to say that 2011 was my best year yet; the website become a full blown paying-for-hosting-and-actually-earning-a-few-bucks-from-ads website in addition to a brand new name. I also introduced a couple of returning features: Instantwatched, Liquor I Like, and the What I’m Reading Round Up (BTW, I won’t be including any of those posts in this list because I love all of them unconditionally). So thanks to everyone that has ever Internet stumbled onto my humble little website. I hope its been as fun to read as it has been to write!

If you’re ever in the God forsaken hell hole* that’s known as Columbia, MO take the time to visit a refreshingly cool hell hole known as the Devil’s Icebox. (I kid only because, as a Jayhawk, I’m contractually obligated to despise this town and its school. Also, because I’m jealous my college town never had a classic burger place like Mugs-Up Drive In)

I’m still here!

No, I didn’t die, I just moved to New York city (again) and didn’t have time to blog. I’ll probably be blogging much less frequently now, but I’ll do my best to post updates a few times a week.

1960s Political Snark: Who’s In Charge Here?

I found this old book in my grandmother’s house and thought its hokey jokes and puns were like a primordial version of today’s political snark. I’ve ‘scanned’ (photographed) a couple of my favorite pages and made them into the slideshow below.

Six famous thought experiments in sixty seconds

This charming little video runs through six of the most famous thought experiments, which used to be incredibly important to science research and building new theories. They still are to a degree, but the prevalence of powerful computers have allowed scientists to test what would have been a thought experiment a century ago.

Google Ngram Viewer: “Income Inequality” vs. “Billionaire”

Google’s Ngram Viewer allows you to see how frequently certain words or phrases were used in books over a given period of time. You can also compare two different words or phrases, as I have done above with ‘Income Inequality’ and ‘Billionaire’. I filtered the time from 1900-2008, which is as recent as it can be (it would be interesting to see if Occupy Wall Street has had a large effect on this instances of the term ‘income inequality’). I also set the corpus to American English, the smoothing to 2, and used only uncapitalized words.
